Speak Up!
Youth make a huge difference in our church, and we want to give them an opportunity to make an even bigger impact.
In Columbus, every youth group is asked to send up to two youth to Speak Up sessions. These youth should be those who are interested in leadership and care about what happens in the broader church.
- They will attend several Speak Up sessions during the regular seminar time slots.
- There will be round table discussions led by the Mennonite Church USA Youth Ministry Leadership Team, a listening committee that will report to the adult delegates,
- and there will be a daily report from adult sessions given by Mennonite Church USA leaders.
- During one session, Speak Up representatives will join the adult delegate session to give input on discussions they will make.
- On the registration form, the contact sponsor can name the youth who will participate in this event.
Small group times
Small groups will meet daily from 10:45 – 1145 a.m. throughout the week. Small groups are intended to give youth groups an opportunity to reflect and share convention experiences, raise questions, respond to challenges presented by the speakers and share more intimately with each other as a youth group. Material for small group times will be prepared by Convention Planning as part of the Sponsor Handbook and will be sent to the contact sponsor of each registered youth group. Sponsors are responsible to facilitate small group experiences for their youth group. We encourage groups to meet for a second small group time from 11:45 p.m. – 12:15 a.m.
Seminars
Seminars are being planned for all ages. Continue to check this site for information regarding titles and leaders.
Recreation
TSpace is being set aside as a recreation area in the convention center. This space will have basketball and volleyball courts, ping pong tables, as well as other activities to allow convention participants to release some energy. A portion of the space is being designed specifically for younger children.
A 5k run is scheduled for 8:00 a.m. Sunday morning. Registration is limited to the first 500 runners.
Choir
An intergenerational choir will perform during the joint worship service. Practices will be scheduled several times during the days preceeding the joint worship service. Register for choir on the registration form.
Learning tracks
Learning tracks are designed to provide a series of discussions focused on specific issues. More details will be coming soon.
Blood drive
The American Red Cross will be hosting a blood drive during the convention. Sign up sheets will be available during on-site registration. This is a wonderful opportunity to leave a lasting impression on the local community.
Servant Projects
TServant Projects are being planned at various locations throughout Columbus. Convention cities are very appreciative of the help our participants provide through Servant Projects. Youth groups, young adults and adults are invited to participate. Sign up for a project on the registration form.
Late night events
Two highlights will be a Christian rock concert by Kutless and The Upside Down King, a Western District Conference organized musical. Please continue to check back for more details.
The Upside Down King is an upbeat, fun, and powerful re-telling of the life and ministry of Jesus. This original musical, with script by Carol Duerksen and music by Doug & Jude Krehbiel (Road Less Travelled), features a young adult cast, and a live classic rock and roots band. Geared for youth and all ages the Upside Down King focuses on the flipped-over aspects of Christ's life and teachings, including loving enemies, being servants, and going the second mile. Presented by Western District Conference and Bethel College.
Pre-convention and post-convention events
Curently, the only pre-convention event will be Pastor's Day on Tuesday. Please continue to check back for more details concerning post-convetion events.
