A Stance of Service

Because this is my first time writing for Equipping as Executive Director, I want to share my perspective as a leader among leaders. During my first week in the new role, I took time for a spiritual retreat to listen for God’s priorities. God clearly spoke to me about the importance of keeping first things first. As I meditated on a number of New Testament scriptures that use the word “first,” I was struck by two sayings of Jesus. Both verses focused on the way leaders relate to others. Jesus said, “So the last will be first, and the first will be last… Whoever wants to be first must be your slave,” (Matthew 20:16, 26.)

After a sweeping yearlong study, Mennonite Church USA leadership has received a consultant’s report on how the denomination operates and with suggestions to improve its witness. Consultant LaVern Yutzy’s 22-page “Report on Alignment Opportunities for Mennonite Church USA” puts forth recommendations for 15 different areas of church organization, addressing issues such as the role of area conferences, Executive Board composition and the four churchwide program agencies functions and structures

Schmidt completes 27 years at Mennonite Church USA Newton offices

NEWTON, Kan.—When Doris Schmidt logged off her computer Dec. 31 at Mennonite Church USA, she concluded 21 consecutive and 27 total years of work at 722 North Main in Newton, Kan. For most of 50 years she filled office positions at the denominational offices and at other places in Newton and North Newton, welcoming some changes and adjusting to others in office technology.
