Archives

The Historical Committee administers the official Mennonite Church USA archives, located in Goshen, Ind., on the campus of Goshen College, and in North Newton, Kan., on the campus of Bethel College. Together they are home to some 20 million documents pertaining to the Mennonite/Anabaptist faith in the United States and around the world. Those documents include personal letters, diaries, business correspondence, meeting minutes, financial statements, legal documents, and more. We also have extensive collections of photographs, taped oral interviews, and films and videos.

As the official Mennonite Church USA repositories, the Goshen and North Newton archives have the records of the denomination’s Executive Leadership and churchwide agencies (Mennonite Education Agency, Mennonite Mission Network, Mennonite Mutual Aid, and Mennonite Publishing Network) as well as their predecessor organizations in the Mennonite Church and General Conference Mennonite Church.

Prior to the two groups’ merger in 2002 to create Mennonite Church USA, the Goshen archives was the denominational repository for the Mennonite Church and North Newton was the repository for the General Conference Mennonite Church.

In addition, we have materials from many Mennonite Church USA congregations and area conferences, although some collections are in regional Mennonite archives. (See list.) We also have more than 1,500 personal collections and records from many Mennonite-affiliated organizations such as Mennonite Central Committee.

Our archival holdings are not limited to Mennonite Church USA. We also have significant Hutterite and Amish collections as well as materials from other Anabaptist-related groups.
