| Howdy Neighbor, Do You Want to Hang Out? | |

| | We all discriminate. Even within racial/ethnic groups there is discrimination. Some are too light, too dark, too poor, too rich, too smart, too dumb, too something to be included in our desired group/inner circle. We segregate and relegate people to the little compartments in our minds. We decide how much and in what way we are going to relate to them. Sometimes we have to make judgments based on our natural experiences with people. That is called wisdom, but we must be careful that our earthly wisdom does not supplant our Godly calling to love our neighbors. | | |

| | The Dispersed Church | |

| | Sometimes for Racial/Ethnic people we have a connection to the Mennonite Church, but we don’t really understand how it works (the church or the connection). In fact sometimes the connection doesn’t work that well and we feel cut off and disconnected. If the question was asked, “Can you hear me know?” A lot of us would say, “No.” Some would say, “No hablo ingles.” In some ways we are a “dispersed church.” We are not located in the Mennonite Meccas, but we are spread out in tiny churches throug out the United States. Not only do we not understand how to connect, but we don’t even know where to connect. | | |

| | Does having piles of ethnic friends in close proximity mean that you are not a racist? Does proximity tolerance of other ethnic groups mean that you don’t participate or contribute to racist systems? Does eating with a Mexican, Puerto Rican, and Cuban mean that you are pro-Latino and that you have done your part to dismantle racism in your community, your workplace, and your church? | | |

| | So what does this Anti-Racist church we are seeking looking like? Do you have a vision for that? What is the perfect picture that we are looking at painting? Often as I sit in meetings for Mennonite Church USA the question is asked, “Why are we so white?” The question puzzles me. In some ways the question is a good one and in some ways the question troubles me. Are we simply looking to add color to the church or are we looking for something more to truly become an antiracist church. Here are a several models for you to ponder. | | |
