Pastors Day to kick off Convention 2009

The next Mennonite Church USA Convention is less than a year away. Convention 2009 will be June 30 to July 4, 2009, in Columbus, Ohio. Pastors Day will kick off the Mennonite Church USA Convention in Columbus, Ohio, next summer. This is the first biennial convention of the denomination to devote an entire day to resource pastors.

The theme for the event is “Pastors as Missional Leaders.” Programming will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m, June 30, 2009. Darrell Guder, Lois Barrett and Jim Schrag are scheduled as presenters. The day will include plenary sessions and small group discussions. Keynote speaker Darrell Guder will speak on the missional church, and Lois Barrett will give leadership to small group discussions.

Pastors Day will connect with the theme for Convention 2009, “Breathe and be filled.” It’s a theme meant to remind us that before we can recognize where God is at work in the world and join that work, we must first breathe in and be filled with the power of the Holy Spirit.

In John 20: 21-22, the Scripture for Mennonite Church USA Convention 2009, Jesus breathes on the disciples and invites them to receive God’s Spirit so they can be prepared for the work that lies ahead. Just as Jesus’ disciples were encouraged to take in God’s Spirit so they could do God’s work in the world, so will everyone who comes to Convention 2009 be invited to take a moment to stop and breathe in God’s Spirit.

It’s not about breathing to be content. It’s about breathing so that Mennonite Church USA can grow as a community of grace, joy and peace so that God’s healing and hope flow through us to the world.

More information on Convention 2009 is available here. Online registration will begin at 8 a.m. Eastern time Dec. 1, 2008.
