Cara Rufenacht is a website designer and photographer living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She started her own business in 2013 after working for several years in non-profit communications. Cara grew up in Archbold, Ohio and graduated from Bluffton University. She is married to Joseph Delphia, a teacher and ceramic artist. Cara and Joe attend Pittsburgh Mennonite Church. During a visioning exercise at the Pittsburgh Mennonite Church fall retreat I sat with fellow members and discussed our hopes for our church. We sought to answer in three words or less, “What is PMC’s purpose, and how will we make it happen?” Answers...

[Español] NORTH NEWTON, Kan.—“We are here and we’ve been gathered by God, and the truth is gathered, too,” said Chuck Neufeld, conference minister for Illinois Mennonite Conference, during a plenary session at the March 26–28 meeting of Mennonite Church USA’s Constituency Leaders Council (CLC) in North Newton, Kan. We believe in Jesus Christ, the Word of God become flesh. He is the Savior of the world, who has delivered us from the dominion of sin and reconciled us to God by humbling himself and becoming obedient unto death on a cross.1 He was declared to be Son of God with power by his resurrection from the dead.2 He is the head of the church, the exalted Lord, the Lamb who was slain, coming again to reign with God in glory. “No other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” 3 We confess...

By Jane Hoober Peifer I recently retired from 24 years of pastoral ministry in two different churches. A few years earlier I knew within my spirit that my time of congregational leadership was coming to a close. This kind of thing is not easy to describe to other people (or myself for that matter). I just knew that a shift was happening within me, and if I’ve learned anything in these 24 years, it is to trust those stirrings within. God is usually up to something, so I listened carefully....

(Appeared first in January 2013, The Mennonite. Reprinted with permission.) By Ervin Stutzman There has never been the slightest doubt in my mind that the God who started this great work in you would keep at it and bring it to a flourishing finish on the very day Christ Jesus appears.—Philippians 1:6 (The Message) And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.—Romans 8:28. (TNIV) God is at work in the world to...

By Ervin Stutzman For the last number of months, I’ve been writing about the positive aspects of the exercise of pastoral power. Beginning with this issue, I will address some of its dangers and downsides. A couple of weeks ago, MennoMedia sent me advance copy for two programs scheduled to be aired on the Shaping Families radio program. The recordings told the story of anguished parents who had walked alongside their teenage daughter after she was sexually abused in a congregation by a well-loved youth pastor. Even...

By Ervin Stutzman In a sermon at Parkview Mennonite Church (Harrisonburg, Va.), Pastor Barbara Moyer Lehman reflected on a pastoral practice she remembered from her childhood at Blooming Glen Mennonite Church (Pa.). She recalled how the ministers used to raise their hands high, arms outstretched, when they pronounced the benediction at the end of the worship service. During her early days as a pastor, Barbara wondered if she could do that as a woman. Somehow, it didn't feel natural and she questioned whether she really had permission...

Mennonite Church USA has roots in seventeenth-century churches planted by immigrants from Europe. Our church continues to grow and be enlivened by immigrants who join us from many countries. As Christians, we believe we are called to welcome these sojourners in our congregations and communities, especially as our government creates increasingly harsh immigration laws in the name of fighting terrorism. Assumptions about identity make some people more vulnerable to political biases and discrimination than others. Our concerns about the status of immigrants in this country relate to how people are treated based on race, nationality, ethnicity, and religious identity....
