submitted by Barbra Graber, SNAP-Menno The seeds of this Mennonite movement began with Dr. Ruth E. Krall, emeritus professor of nursing, religion, and psychology and former peace studies program director at Goshen College. She was first introduced to Catholic activists when she heard Dominican priest Father Thomas Doyle speak in 2006 about the connection between clergy sexual violence and institutional clericalism – that cloud of personal power we are taught to hand over to ordained leaders and their religious hierarchies. Krall had already dedicated decades of her life to understanding and penetrating the deeply hidden plague of sexual abuse among...

John Howard Yoder Digest: Collected Articles About Sexual Abuse and Discernment For those who are following the discussions related to John Howard Yoder’s sexual abuse of women and its theological and ecclesiological implications, here is a collection of articles that outline the conversation and developments. This is not necessarily comprehensive, so feel free to suggest other articles to add to this digest. In early June of 2013, responding to a book review written in The Mennonite, Barbra Graber created a Facebook note about John Howard Yoder’s abuses and what the church must do to work towards accountability and healing....

Ervin Stutzman is executive director of Mennonite Church USA As a convener of the Discernment Group, I read, along with many of you, “The failure to bind and loose” (January 2015 The Mennonite) and the much longer “’Defanging the Beast,’: Mennonite responses to John Howard Yoder’s Sexual Abuse” (January 2015, Mennonite Quarterly Review ). Historian Rachel Waltner Goossen has done the church a profound service. She chronicled the history of John Howard Yoder’s “sexual experiment,” and the church’s failure to effectively intervene to halt his violation of dozens of women in many places around the world. The article is like...

By Colleen McFarland If you’re like me, you probably don’t associate Mennonites with yetis. Mennonites and four-part singing, delicious pies, and peace witness? Yes, absolutely. But Mennonites and yetis? Not so much. Yetis, also known as abominable snowmen, are hairy, ape-like creatures that have been seen by Nepalese and non-native mountaineers alike in the Himalayas. Thought to be over six feet tall when standing, yetis reportedly resemble large orangutans or bears, with shaggy red-brown fur and a propensity to walk on all fours. As you might have guessed,...

The Women in Leadership Project is glad to commend two resources for worship. First, in the introduction to the Do You See This Woman? worship series we share the following: "Worship that gives voice to any group that has, at times, been left out or devalued is worship that offers the whole church an opportunity to experience God in a fuller and deeper way. Thus, this series is designed to minister to both women and men. Each of the five services in this series focuses on stories of biblical women in ways that give voice to the dynamics of patriarchy...

By Hannah Heinzekehr If you are Mennonite – or maybe even not Mennonite, but just a scholar interested in the work of John Howard Yoder – you may have noticed that his name is cropping up a lot these days, and not just in relationship to his scholarly works. Prompted by a brave letter to the editor by Barbra Graber, Mennonite Church USA executives, as well as leaders...

By Emily Kraybill What types of unique leadership do you bring to the Mennonite church and your community? I have found that there are fewer spaces in the Mennonite Church for single woman who have lived a full life. I have felt that God has called me to be single, and because of that I was able to serve as a missionary for many years. Many resources in the Church are biased towards married or divorced women. I remember when I was...
