Theme: Lament in response to the Doctrine of Discovery
Worship resources for MC USA’s annual Mennonite Heritage Sunday, created by Dismantling the Doctrine of Discovery Coalition members, are available now:
The impacts of the Doctrine of Discovery, including land theft and loss, broken relationships, and cultural assimilation, are part of our history as Mennonites. Whether we are people of color, and/or descended from white settlers, our stories here on Turtle Island lead us to lament the ongoing wounds of colonialism and to call out to God for healing and justice.
Heritage Sunday takes place on October 28, 2018, the last Sunday of October, to mark events and people with historical importance in the church.
Note for pastors: A recent Federal Court ruling jeopardizes Native American rights and tribal sovereignty by striking down adoption protections for Native American children. The Dismantling the Doctrine of Discovery Coalition issued this statement on October 18th, and encourages pastors to include lament and reflection on this current injustice.
