New screening protocol for MC USA ministry candidates

Important update for potential ministers

Mennonite Church USA is strengthening its commitment to safe and accountable ministry leadership. Beginning March 1, 2026, MC USA is implementing an enhanced screening protocol as part of its Prevention and Accountability Resource initiative.

What’s changing?

MC USA’s Ministerial Leadership Information (MLI) process now includes more comprehensive background checks designed to protect congregations and ensure qualified, trustworthy leadership. While these enhanced procedures require additional time and investment, they represent MC USA’s dedication to creating safer ministry environments across the denomination.

New processing timeline

The enhanced MLI process will take approximately four weeks to complete, compared to the previous one-to-two- week timeline. MC USA encourages candidates to begin their applications early to avoid delays in their ministry pathway.

Updated fee structure

Starting March 1, 2026:

  • Standard MLI fee: $175 (plus FBI background check)
  • Student rate: $140 (plus FBI background check)

Candidates will need to obtain their own FBI background check, which costs between $30–$70. Detailed instructions for securing this check will be included with each MLI form.

Living into Prevention and Accountability

These changes reflect MC USA’s ongoing commitment to prevention and accountability in ministerial leadership. Enhanced screening helps MC USA identify qualified candidates while protecting vulnerable community members and maintaining the integrity of ministerial credentials.

For questions about the new protocol or to begin an MLI application, candidates may contact their conference minister or visit the MC USA credentialing resources page.
