Radio program offers Easter special

‘Shaping Families’ announces schedule for April

By Melodie Davis

HARRISONBURG, Va.—An Easter special plus an interview with Duane Sider about his father’s experience with Alzheimer’s disease highlight the Shaping Families radio program line-up for April. Two additional programs have been updated for re-release this year on “Facing Cancer” and “Eating Healthier.”

The schedule for April:

  • April 7: “The First Easter.” The Shaping Families Easter program uses “you were there”-type fictional newscasts of the first Easter from the long-running “Greatest Week in History” radio programs from the archives of MennoMedia, along with Mennonite Hour Singers’ musical selections “O sacred head now wounded” and “What wondrous love.”
  • April 14: “Facing Cancer.” Laura Jaynes, a teacher, wife, and mother from Dayton, Va., shares how she found her pathway as she faced terminal breast cancer. After her initial diagnosis with a particularly lethal type of cancer, she resolved to do all she could to “be there” for her young son, who was four at the time. She died on Palm Sunday 2011 on the day her interview was first broadcast.
  • April 21: “Alzheimer’s.” Duane Sider, director of learning for Rosetta Stone, a language software company in Harrisonburg, Va., recalls his father’s journey with early-onset Alzheimer’s. Roy Sider was overseas missions director for the Brethren in Christ denomination in Canada. Duane has written and performed a play dealing with Alzheimer’s to help others process the long-term pain of the experience.
  • April 28: “Eating Healthier.” Valerie Showalter and Christine Burkholder, both of Harrisonburg, Va., talk about how faith impacts their selecting and cooking of food. They both appeared in the Peace DVD curriculum for youth produced by Third Way Media. Showalter spent a year in Mennonite Voluntary Service, where her understandings about hunger and world food shortages grew, which led to her decision to be vegan. Burkholder and her family operate a Community-Supported Agriculture farm.

The weekly 15-minute Shaping Families program airs each weekend on 18 local stations and online at www.ShapingFamilies.com, produced by Third Way Media on behalf of Mennonite churches through MennoMedia.
