‘The Naked Anabaptist’ in Spanish

Herald Press releases translation of popular 2010 book

By Steve Shenk

HARRISONBURG, Va.,and WATERLOO, Ont.—The Naked Anabaptist: The Bare Essentials of a Radical Faith struck a chord among readers in North America when it came out in 2010. Now, almost two years and 12,000 copies later, the book is being released in Spanish by Herald Press.

The author is Stuart Murray, a trainer and consultant with Anabaptist Network, based in Bristol, England. The translator is Mauricio Chenlo of Raleigh, N.C. He is a denominational minister with Mennonite Church USA.

“As soon as I had finished my reading of the book, I realized we didn’t have anything of that caliber in Spanish since the time of The Politics of Jesus by John Howard Yoder and several booklets written by John Driver,” said Chenlo. “I believe Murray’s creativity is his contextualization of some of the core convictions of the Anabaptist faith for the European postmodern environment.”

In the future, said Chenlo, “We need authors, in Spanish, to contextualize Anabaptism in the realities of contemporary Latin Americans and Hispanics.”

When Chenlo advocated for a Spanish translation of The Naked Anabaptist, he was told, “Great idea, but we lack funding for that kind of work.” In the end, Chenlo wrote the translation himself with a combination of stipend funds and volunteer work.

The new book answers the question, What does Anabaptism look like when not clothed in 500 years of Mennonite tradition? Author Murray, who works under the auspices of the Anabaptist Network in Britain, peels back the layers to reveal the core components of Anabaptism—and what they mean for faith in his context and ours.

Anabautismo al Desnudo: Covicciones Basicas de una Fe Radical is priced at $13.99 USD / $16.00 CAD. It is available at www.MennoMedia.org/Anabautismo or by calling 800-245-7894 (U.S.) or 800-631-6535 (Canada).

Herald Press is the book imprint of MennoMedia, which is a ministry of Mennonite Church USA and Mennonite Church Canada.
