ELKHART, Ind. (Mennonite Church USA)—In the days leading up to Mennonite Church USA’s next biennial convention, to be held July 1–6, 2013, in Phoenix, Ariz., the Minnesota Peacebuilding Leadership Institute (MPLI) will offer Level I of the STAR (Strategies for Trauma, Awareness and Resilience) Training near the convention site to make this continued education opportunity accessible for convention participants.
The training will be offered June 25–29, 2013, at Trinity Mennonite Church in Glendale, Ariz.
The STAR Training is a four-and-a-half-day evidence-based academic and experiential education training that integrates neuropsychology, trauma healing and resilience, spirituality, restorative justice, conflict transformation and nonviolent peacebuilding to strengthen the capacity of caregivers, leaders and organizations to address trauma, break cycles of violence and build resilience in local and global communities.
The Center for Justice and Peacebuilding at Eastern Mennonite University, Harrisonburg, Va., created the program (www.emu.edu/star). STAR Training alumni include 2011 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Leymah Gbowee and the president of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
Facilitators for the June training will be Donna Minter, PhD, LP, a neuropsychologist, forensic psychology evaluator and executive director of the MPLI; and Crixell Shell, BS, a Rule 114 community mediator with the University of St. Thomas (St. Paul, Minn.) Interprofessional Center for Counseling and Legal Services and director of communication for the MPLI.
The training is open to anyone. To maximize the experience, a minimum of 12 trainees is required, and the training is limited to 25 participants. Tuition is $698 before May 14 and $750 after. A discount is available for groups of three or more registering together by mail. Social workers, therapists, counselors, psychologists, educators, nurses, mediators and other professionals can receive 27 hours of continuing education credit for an additional $60 fee.
