By Andre Gingerich Stoner What’s that? I often get asked when I introduce myself as Director of Holistic Witness for Mennonite Church USA. Holistic witness involves peacemaking and sharing faith, it involves helping birth new faith communities and seeking justice, it involves service and forgiveness. But these concerns are often pitted against each other. People sometimes try to overcome these divisions by saying: We need to do both – peace and evangelism, word and deed. But I think we need to...

All You Need Is Love will feature three plenary sessions. The first panel will set the stage for the conference, exploring how we talk about love, diversity and theology. For those who are following the latest discussions related to John Howard Yoder’s sexual abuse of women and its theological and ecclesiological implications, here is a collection of articles that outline the conversation and developments. This is not necessarily comprehensive, so feel free to suggest other articles to add to this digest. [updated periodically] In early June of 2013, responding to a book review written in The Mennonite, Barbra Graber created a Facebook note about John Howard Yoder’s abuses and what the church must do to work towards accountability and healing. A lively discussion ensued and she continues to add to...

By Laura Brenneman I am in mourning not only because Trayvon Martin is dead, not only because the state of Florida has deemed it acceptable for a man to use deadly force against an unarmed African American 17-year-old male, and not only because the dysfunction of my nation and my Christian faith tradition plays itself out painfully primarily in the bodies of black people, brown people, women, and LGBTQ people. I am also falling into deeper and deeper despair...

The resolution is set in the context of: our biblical belief statements; our growing awareness of diverse forms of environmental degradation; our location in North America, where complicity, power, and environmental benefits and harms remain unjustly distributed;and our desire to be faithful to our missional vision as followers of Jesus Christ. By Joanna Shenk First, I realize that many Mennonites have been skeptical of the feminist movement in previous generations and even today. Although I identify as a feminist I donot believe that the movement, and even the definition of the term, are without problems. I think at times the movement has been an excuse to demonize men rather than think about the ways men are also diminished by sexism. I think the term...

Joining efforts of local groups that work with immigrants is one way to get involved [Español] By Hilary J. Scarsella ELKHART, Ind. (Mennonite Church USA)—Participants in Mennonite Church USA’s biennial convention in Phoenix this July will have various opportunities to learn about and engage issues of immigration. This is, in part, due to the convention location and the controversial nature of Arizona’s anti-immigration law, the Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act (SB1070). Iris de León-Hartshorn, director of transformative peacemaking for Mennonite Church USA, recommends that those who plan to attend convention prepare themselves by learning about immigration in...
