Nancy Kauffmann is denominational minister for Mennonite Church USA. In expressing concerns to me about the future of Mennonite Church USA, someone recently said, “I fear the direction the Mennonite Church is headed in. I fear we are losing all that we hold dear. Is the church going to survive all this?” For the rest of the day, I kept thinking about the word fear that was used over and over in that conversation. That night, I was reading the story of Mary Magdalene and the other Mary going to the tomb in Matthew 28 and was hit again with...

Rachel S. Gerber is denominational minister of Christian Formation for Mennonite Church USA. As a pastor, the story of Holy Week always poses a variety of challenges, like a parent dressing up leftovers to feed the family dinner, again. Turkey meatballs! Turkey tetrazzini! Turkey tacos! As a church we hear this same drama played out again and again, year after year. Sure the Gospel readings change, but the general story content remains the same. Often in the case with familiar stories, our minds move to auto-pilot and we fail to completely engage and enter into the story fully. But this...

Iris de León-Hartshorn is director of Transformative Peacemaking for Mennonite Church USA. Mary’s Song of Praise And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. His mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. He has...

Glen Guyton is chief operating officer and director of Convention Planning for Mennonite Church USA. After ringing in 2017 with my 88 year old mother and 93 year old aunt I seriously began thinking about family times, history and my future. My time with my familial matriarchs left me wondering what type of legacy I will be leaving for my children and the people I have connected with throughout the 24 years I have been part of the Mennonite community. Interestingly enough, I am at the half-life mark with the Mennonites. I was about 23 when I found Calvary Community...

Jason Boone is coordinating minister of the Peace and Justice Support Network. What are your hopes for peace in 2017? Are they for a specific issue, country or group of people? Most of us have certain “hot buttons” that drive us to do more and work harder. I have ideas on what peace topics perhaps should take priority over others and I’m sure you do as well. But after a tumultuous 2016, I believe the most important word for peacemakers is from Luke chapter 10: “Jesus told them, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord...
